Who we are
About the Observatory
The International Observatory for School Climate and Violence Prevention (IOSCVP) was established in 2000 with support from the European Commission, in response to the lack of shared definitions and coordinated efforts around school violence across regions. Initially focused on violence prevention research, the Observatory evolved through key milestones, including its formal constitution as an association under French law, the publication of a scientific journal, and biennial international research meetings.
Over the years, the Observatory has shifted its scope to include broader issues such as school climate, wellbeing, and prosocial development, supporting both academic research and policy-practice collaboration. Its leadership has included prominent scholars such as Éric Debarbieux, Cathérine Blaya, Jonathan Cohen, Grace Skrzypiec, and Rosario Ortega. Since 2023, the co-presidency is held by Prof. Rosario del Rey (Universidad de Sevilla) and Prof. Verónica López (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile).
Now based at the Universidad de Sevilla, the IOSCVP functions as a multinational, non-governmental organization committed to promoting safe, equitable, and engaging learning environments that support the holistic development of children and adolescents. Through research, dialogue, and shared leadership, the Observatory fosters collaborative learning and informs effective educational practices and policies around the world.
The International Observatory for School Climate and Violence Prevention (IOSCVP) is now a part of the Universidad de Sevilla, Spain.
The Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) has assumed the co-presidency of the International Observatory for School Climate and Violence Prevention (IOSCVP) through academic Verónica López. As part of this role, the university will host the X World Conference on Convivencia, Climate and Violence in Schools, to be held on October 28, 29, and 30, organized by the Centro de Investigación para la Educación Inclusiva.
